all the characters in the movie represent people in the 1800's. like the scarecrow is the farmer because he sits out in the field all the time. the tin man represents industrial workers the reason that is,is that they treat him bad in the movie just like the workers where when they worked. also the munchkins are just ordinary people of the town. that is how the wizard of oz is related to the 1800's.
i think it is interesting that when the movie was first made, it was "solely to please children of today." then in 1901 when the musical version was written, it had a lot of political references. It was also interesting that all the characters actually stand for something: tinman as industrial worker, scarecrow as a farmer, muchkins as everyday citizens, etc. Also the O and Z in Oz are referring to the abbreviation for ounce, which was used to measure gold, and in the ratio 16:1, which is ounces silver to gold. It wasinteresting that Dorothy was not in the original wizard of oz. She was added by Baum and Denslow when they retold the story, and she represented American workers or union workers.
I find it very interesting how the characters in the movie represent everyday people in the 1800's. For instance, the tin man, represents the hard workers of the east, and how they were treated, also the midwestern farmers from back in this time was represented by the scarecrow. It was said that he didn't have much of a brain and the cracks in the road others walked around and he stepped on. or the wicked witch of the west represents a railroad baron, they ruled over the common workers and farmers. the winged monkeys are the plains indians, because they were unable to find home anywhere, and couldn't be sent back to the west. the gold standard represents the yellow brick road, was percieved as insufficient, and was already almost cornered. these many reasons are why the wizard of oz is related to the time of the 1800's.
before this class (and with help of the blog) i didnt know that the wizard of oz was acutally the cival war in a cartoon movie style, learning the the diffrent characters were real people and resembled someone was quite facinating like the monkeys were resembling pinkerton detectives the yellow brick road was gold the slippers were silver i could kinda guess the scarecrow was the farmer and the tin man was the eastern worker ( but those were kinda common sense) lookin forward to learning more exciting things about cartoon stuff
i had no clue that a movie that was meant to be for children would be reflecting to the 1800's. especailly because The Wizard of OZ is one of my favorite childhood movies. i think it is really interesting that the each character in this is a person in the 1800's. i think it is really fascinating that the silver coinage is represented by the silver shoes, i know get it, why the wicked witch of the East wanted them so badly because she was the BAnker Boss. i am looking forward to see what other movies are referred back into history.
ok so like the tin man is the industrial worker, the scarecrow is the farmer the "Ruby" slippers were originally silver and the wickedwitch is a ugly banker. Also the yellow-brick road is made of gold the flying monkeys are the pinkerton agents. so yeah it is all about the depression.
