  1. -Gypsy Swing Revue | Puttin' On The Ritz. This was a very famous song in the 30's. It was upbeat and jazzy, exactly what we needed in our economic troubles. This song represents how we were in economic trouble. Most of our music helped us through this Dark Age.

-The 30's was a big time for movies. Sound and color came with movies such as Hell's Angels and The Big Trail. I personally loved the Big Trail. It was a western film. The movie was full of excitement. Check it out! The Three Stooges also made their first movie in the 30's. Here's the movie, it’s hilarious. Our entertainment was booming in this era. After the war people just wanted to have fun; and because of the industrial boom it was easy to do just that. We went out to the drive in many times a month. It was a really good time, it really lightened the mood.

-This is a ticket to Mikey Walker vs. Joe Luis. This was the match to see. Boxing was big in the 30's. Many people would gamble on these men, and they never would disappoint. Plus, it was rather cheap to go see these men fight, and really fun.

-This is a pillbox hat. Women wore this to look prestigious. I, personally, thought they were the bee's knees. This gave women a very classy look. Many wore this hat to big events.

-Here’s a popular book from the 30s; The Good Earth by Pearl S Buck. This book won the Pulitzer Prize in 1932. This book is about a Chinese man marrying a Chinese slave. They build a life together and have a son. It’s a rather interesting read, very cultural. That wasn’t very common for the 30s.

-Clark Gable was a very famous actor, and was very handsome. This is a poster of him, lovely.

-The depression caused many people to illegally ride trains for transportation. Here is a filer telling people to quit. Most people called these hoodlums hobos. This happened because many people couldn’t afford to take care of their children. The children were forced out in the world to make money. Of course, they would need a way to get around and railroad riding was the easiest way. Of course, some children left by choice, but this became an epidemic really fast.

  3. I chose to put a piece of nylon which was invented in 1935. The reason in chose this is today nylon is widely used in everyday life. The impact that nylon had on the nineteen thirties was it was supposed to be a replacement material for silk. The quest for a replacement for silk was due to the deteriorating trade relations between the USA and Japan.

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0031381/
Gone with the wind is one of the best movies of our time. I Really loved this movie, and lets young people know what it was like in the civil war. And really opens their eyes to how bad those times were.

    http://www.lyrics007.com/Duke%20Ellington%20Lyrics/Three%20Little%20Words%20Lyrics.html
This song has a lot of meaning for me. I was in love. I believed what he said, I thought he cared. But he just left me standing by myself.

    Movie: The Wizard of Oz
    http://www.filmsite.org/wiza.html
The people in the future will love the movie the Wizard of Oz just like I do. I love the plot of the story, and how she gets taken far away by a tornado. People will love how the characters want to change little things about them.

Ticket Stub to a Sporting Event: 1933 All-Star Game
    http://www.baseball-almanac.com/asgbox/yr1933as.shtml
I went to the first ever All-Star Game in July at Chicago's Comiskey Park. The players in the All-Star game were selected by the fans and by the managers. Everyone was so excited to play on the same field as Babe Ruth.

    Article of Clothing: Hat
    http://www.davenportandco.com/20'shats.htm
This black mesh hat was my favorite. I wore it every time I went out on the town. In order to look good in a nice dress, you needed a nice hat to top off the outfit.

    Book: Grapes of Wrath
    http://www.cliffsnotes.com/study_guide/literature/The-Grapes-of-Wrath.id-117.html

  6. “Big Rock Candy Mountain” http://www.obrothermusic.com/
I chose this song because it shows the perspective of a person with not a lot of money to begin with during the great depression. It is showing how traveling is better than staying in one place because you have more opportunities in different places.

    “ I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang” http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0023042/
I chose this movie because it is telling the story if a WW1 hero who comes home to nothing. It tells how he leaves home to find work but has a hard time finding it because of the depression.

    “1936 World Series” http://keymancollectibles.com/tickets/images/wpe36.jpg
I chose the 1936 World Series because it was some great American baseball. I am a huge Yankees fan and you should have been there with me. It was back and forth with whom was going to win, but the Yankees ended on top. That is what I believe was the start of a great team.

    “Coral Gown” http://www.cabaretvintage.com/wp-content/gallery/new-arrival-1930s-coral-waterprint-taffeta-gown/img_4950cabaret_vintage.jpg
I chose this particular dress to share because it shows how clothing for women decreased in coverage. Women started exposing their skin more during this time. This is a good model of how women would be dressed when they were in public.

    “Gone with the Wind” http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0031381/
I chose to share Gone with the Wind because it has such a great impact on society. Everyone wants to see this movie, it is wonderful. The story line is livid and makes you crave more.

Tunguska is a big subject being talked about right now. When Leonid Kulik went to explore the remainder of this object it was a new thing. He found out a lot about what actually happened that morning when the flash of light shot across the sky.

The song “Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries” by Lew Brown is about the Great Depression. It’s a happy song saying that there is nothing to worry about. It says to not take things seriously and just live life and have fun with doing it.

    http://www.epinions.com/content_3383402628
The Wizard of Oz defined its genre. This movie isn’t very successful. The movie proves that even when things get bad there is good at the end. It means a lot to me because it shows me that there is hope.

This is a ticket stub from a Phila A’s game at The Greater Shibe Park in Philadelphia. It was the world championship baseball game. The game was a lot of fun and I enjoyed it.

Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck was very popular during my time. The book is about two men who have a dream. The book shows that dreams sometimes fail. It was important in my time because it was a hard time for everyone.

  10. I put the song “Puttin’ on the Ritz” by Fred Astaire in the time capsule because it is very accurate at describing the way people wanted to live during this hard time. A great majority of these people include teenagers. We love fashion and living the high life. It is a good feeling to wear million dollar clothes.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lN0cR0vMZV4

I chose the movie King Kong to put in the time capsule because it is my favorite movie of all time. It was very popular among us teenagers because we love all the action and adventure. The storyline is very creative. The action and graphics in this movie are so intense I get an adrenaline rush every time I watch it.
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0024216/

I included a ticket stub from the famous boxing match between Joe Louis and Max Schmeling held on June 18, 1936. Boxing was a very fun sport to watch for all people. It is sure to get your adrenaline pumping. Especially this match, which was held at Yankee Stadium.
    http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f205/blakerz1960/BOXINGJOELOUISVMAXSCHMELING1936.jpg

In the time capsule, there is also a fedora hat which I included. This was a very popular hat for many people, mostly men. We like wearing them because we feel like a gangster. It is likely that almost every man living in the 1930s owned at least one fedora.
    http://www.ehow.com/about_4600658_fedora-hats.html

I chose the book “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck to put in the time capsule. This was a very popular book for many people. Many people in the 1930s could relate to the situations portrayed in this book. It was during the hard times of the 1930s when there wasn’t much for work and many people did not have a job.
    http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/micemen/summary.html

I have included a poster of Babe Ruth in the time capsule. He was a baseball legend. Everyone was awed by his baseball abilities, especially hitting homeruns. He was a very popular sports figure among young and old people in the 1930s.
    http://www.ftl.pinecrest.edu/athletics/sports_zone/teams/baseball/Baseball%20Quotes/index.htm

In the time capsule there will also be a photograph of Franklin Roosevelt’s inauguration. This was a very important event for all Americans. This point in history changed America greatly because we now have a new president. Roosevelt was a well liked president; he was the only one to serve four terms.

  11. Over the Rainbow by Judy Garland: I would put this in song because it was the only song that I recognized. At first I didn't realize where I'd heard it but then one the websites said she sang the song in The Wizard of Oz.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKIjsWUbhVM
Wizard of Oz: I would put this in because I recognized it. Then I went to a website 3383402628 and it said that the movie was ahead of its time. That for the time period with the color, sound, and graphics, it was like watching The Matrix with an audience from the 1950's and I thought that was cool. http://www.epinions.com/content_
Ticket Stub to Boxing Match; Joe Louis Vs Max Baer: I chose this because I have never have never been interested in boxing but as I was reading this I found myself actually being interested and wanting to see this fight because it sounds like it was a really good fight that should be in history.
    http://www.sportplanet.com/sbb/apfas/30R.HTM
Palm Beach Suit: I would put this in because I think it is cool. I like it because I like suits I think that they look really cool. If I lived in the 30’s I would definitely have worn a Palm Beach suit.
    http://www.murrayonhawaii.com/nolan/fashionhistory_1930mens.html
Of Mice and Men: I would put this in because it is a testament to time. Kids in school still have to read this. It is a good piece of American Literacy and represents America good. http://www.kyrene.org/schools/brisas/sunda/decade/1930.htm
Walt Whitman: I would put a poster of Walt in because he was influential and his company stood the test of time. He started something and made it last. To me he is the epitome of America during this time period because he shows that with a little work things can last, just like America lasted through the Depression.
    http://www.tqnyc.org/2006/NYC063370//entertainment.htm
Great Depression: I would put a picture of people suffering during the Depression because it is the single biggest event of the decade. When I think of the 1930s I always think of the Great Depression because it was such a big thing.

  12. Song
“It Don’t Mean a Thing (If I Ain’t Got That Swing)” by Duke Ellington
This was a great, incredibly popular song of the 1930s. Most Americans were really down during the Great Depression and needed something to make them happy. They needed Duke Ellington’s music! Something they could dance to and have a good time. In this song Ellington says that his life wouldn’t mean a thing if it didn’t have a swing, and I’m sure many others of that era would agree. A lot of Americans didn’t have money, or many belongings, but they could still listen to the music on the radio to bring some swing back to their life.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDQpZT3GhDg
    Movie
    “It Happened One Night”
This movie is a good example of a 1930s film because it is a very humorous film. Making comedies during the 1930s was important because the Great Depression had everyone down. By making Comedies, it reminds people of how good life could be.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALmnUBqbhuo
Ticket Stub to a Sporting Event
    1933 Kentucky Derby
Even though a lot of people lost all their money during the Great Depression, people still wanted to get out and have some fun. Horse Racing was a family event for those who could afford the admission. People came from all across the country to see Gallant Fox, Battleship and War Admiral race around the track. This was a good gig to make some money or lose a lot of money. People of the 1930s loved going to horse racing events.

    Crepe Day Dress
This was a very popular style for women during the 1930s. The long sleeved dress that fell above the knees with it’s bright spring colors. The new material “polyamide” was discovered in the late 20’s, early 30s by Dr. Wallace Carothers. This style flourished and lasted until the end of the decade.

    Book
“The People, Yes” By Carl Sandburg
This book is a great way to tell people from our time, how people in the 1930s felt. It describes how man is a part of nature, and over time nature evolves to make life better and easier. This is what people wanted to hear during the Depression- Everything was going to turn out alright with some time. Times where rough then, but man still had nature to look to if he didn’t have money. Sandburg wrote a great novel to help America have better hopes for tomorrow.

    Poster of a Famous Person
    Clark Gable
Clark Gable is a good example of a 1930s actor because he was an icon for all. He grew up being misunderstood, and eventually moved away to volunteer in local theaters to feed his passion. He stole the hearts of millions in all of the fims he stared in such as “It Happened One Night”, “Love on the Run”, and “Too Hot to Handle”.

Amelia Earhart was the first American Female, aviator. She was the first to fly from Honolulu to California on a solo flight, and was said to be the best. In 1937, her and her copilot, Frederick J. Noonan, made an attempt to fly her plane around the world. However, her plane lost flight and was lost somewhere between New Guinea and Howland. America’s idol was lost forever in the Pacific.

  13. Song: What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJ5yRfUdEIU
I chose this song, because in my opinion it talks about different ways to look at the world, and how things were then, and how people can compare it to now a days.

    Movie: Hells Angels
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0020960/
This was chosen because it talks a lot about WWI's dog fights, and how people looked at it, and that is important to now a days, because i'm sure information and how WWI was seen, is different from everyone, so this could be a view through "gods eyes" so they say.

Sporting Event:New York Baseball Giants Tickets
    www.steenosports.com/vintagevault/1930snewyorkbaseba
I chose this because it shoes how popular baseball was, and how the costing for it then was $1.40, and compared to today, thats so good.

The flapper dress was extremely popular for women to wear in the 1930s, and its funny comparing it to things, women wear today.

    Book: Of Mice and Men
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0031742/
Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck, was a popular book during the 1930s, and basically its about a dream, and we all know all dreams don't come true, and that is true to this day, so it compares the same.

I chose the song Over The Rainbow because it is sung by one of the most iconic singers: Judy Garland. It also has lyrics that are significant to the time period because they are about the hope to get out of The Great Depression and for better times. The song received an Academy Award for Best Original Song as it appeared in The Wizard of Oz, and has been said to be the best sung song of all time.
    http://www.filmsite.org/kingk.html
The movie King Kong, released in 1933 had great importance in the 1930’s. It won no Academy Awards, although if there had been a category for special effects, it probably would have won. It was a low budget film, but it made enough money to save the company that made it from bankruptcy. It is a retelling of the classic Beauty and the Beast story and the story of the ape fighting to find his place in an urban civilization struck true to the time.

My sporting event is the third game in the 1932 World Series. This game was extremely controversial because some say that Babe Ruth, in the fifth inning, called his shot. Babe Ruth did not comment and just added one more thing to his legendary career.

I chose the lady's leather jacket because it represented the shift in women's clothing. Women had, in the past, always worn dresses and skirts and very womanly clothing but during the 1930's they began to wear clothing like the leather jacket and other sports/manly clothing.
    http://www.shvoong.com/books/3674-gone-wind/
Gone With the Wind by Margret Mitchell was later made into an award winning movie. The book is a romance novel, which were really popular during the great depression because it made people forget about their current situation. It is also about a strong female character who was flighty but knew what she wants which is something that women in the 1930's embraced.

This is a poster of Shirley Temple who was the most famous child actor of the 1930´s. Her cute little face and ringlets, paired with her dancing talents made her the most enchanting girl in Holywood. There were thoughts of her playing Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, but she was very young and didn´t quite have the range and could not hit all the note necesarry. She is particularly famous for her tap dancing skills.

Yankees won all 4 games. Babe Ruth hit the longest home run in Wrigley field – 500 ft into the stands.
    -Article of clothing
Clothes were sometimes made from flour sacks. Families had to sew clothes out of them due to the lack of money caused by the depression. Companies figured this out and started to sell flour in patterned sacks, so they could be reused for this purpose.

  16. Ticket stubs to an All-Star baseball game on July 6th, 1933.
    http://www.baseball-almanac.com/asgbox/yr1933as.shtml
I would choose this to be in my time capsule from the 30’s because it was such a huge part of the era’s history. Being such a big deal, I would want people in 2010 to see these ticket stubs and at least know it existed. Babe Ruth played in this game and that is a player everyone should know about.

A copy of the book “Dick and Jane”
    http://www.juliascollectibles.com/DJ30.htm
I would put a copy of this book in the time capsule because it is very important to me and was a huge part of the 30’s. My mom use to read this to me when I was very, very young. When this book came out it was famous and it still is today. People refer to “Dick and Jane” all the time.

A copy of the song When My Baby Smiles at Me by Paul Whiteman
    http://www.popculturemadness.com/Music/Pop-Old/1920.html
This song should go in the time capsule from the 30’s because it was on the charts for being in the top ten for a year or two. This should be in there because it gives a small taste of the typical 30’s music.

My favorite dress from the 30’s
    http://www.buttons-and-bows.co.uk/images/reproduction%20vintage%20dresses.jpg
A dress from the 30’s is important because it would show the typical style and fashion to someone opening the time capsule in 2010. It would be important to me because I love fashion and love learning about the different styles of the different eras.

A picture of the Empire State Building
    http://www.kidsnewsroom.org/elmer/infoCentral/frameset/decade/1930.htm
I would put a picture of the empire state building because it is an important part of history. It was the tallest building in the world as of May 1st 1931. For someone in 2010, the Empire State Building would be an important piece of history to learn about from the 30’s.

A copy of LIFE magazine from the 30’s would be a great thing to put in the time capsule because it would show a variety of events going on in the 30’s. It would have the latest, fashion, drama, sporting events and news articles. This would be something I would choose because I love magazines.

This would be very important to include because it is also a major part of history. People in 2010 should know about their past presidents. A picture of poster of the president in office in 1930 would at least put a face to the name that they read about in history books.
